Joey Kocur

Joey Kocur was born on December 21, 1964 in Calgary, Alberta. He played his minor hockey in Yorkton and then moved up to the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey Leauge (WHL). Kocur was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the 5th round, 88th overall in the 1983 NHL entry draft. He began his pro-hockey career in the Wings organization with the Adirondack Red Wings of the American Hockey League (AHL). By the 1985-86 regular season, he had become a regular with the Red Wings and lead the league with 377 penalty minutes on a team that also included fellow tough guys Bob Probert and Randy Ladouceur. Throughout the rest of the 1980s, Joe Kocur was a regular on the Red Wings and provided them with a lot of grit and some memorable fights.

In March 1991, Kocur was raded from Detroit Red Wings along with Par Djoos to the New York Rangers for Jim Cummins, Dennis Vial and Kevin Miller. He spent six seasons in New York and was one of their enforcers. In 1996 he was traded by the Rangers to the Vancouver Canucks for goalie Kay Whitmore. He only played 7 games with the Canucks and began the following season with the San Antonio Dragons of the International Hockey League (IHL). In December 1997, Joey signed back with the Detroit Red Wings and played in parts of two more seasons and comfortable with his limited role while helping the Red Wings win consecutive Stanley Cups in 1997 and 1998. After retiring in 1999 with 2519 career penalty minutes, Joey Kocur spent two seasons as the Red Wings video coach and later as an assistant coach.
