Ken Baumgartner

Ken Baumgartner was born on March 11, 1966 in Flin Flon, Manitoba. He played his junior hockey with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He was Buffalo Sabres' 12th choice, 245th overall in the 1985 NHL entry draft. In the winter of 1986 he was traded along with Sean McKenna and fellow tough guy Larry Playfair to the Los Angeles Kings for Brian Engblom and Doug Smith. After spending a couple of years between the Kings and their American Hockey League affiliate, New Haven Knighthawks, Ken was once again on the move. This time himself and Hubie McDonough were dealt to the New York Islanders for Miko Makela. Already an established enforcer, Baumgartner would go on to become a fan favourite in Long Island.

After just over two years with the Islanders, he was sent along with Dave McLlwain to the Toronto Maple Leafs with Daniel Marois and Claude Loiselle going the other way. Ken played in integral role in Toronto, providing much needed protection for skilled players like Doug Gilmour and Nikolai Borschevsky. He was traded to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for a draft pick in 1996 and later signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins. Ken spent a year in Boston as a player and then came back for another season as an assitant coach. Ken Baumgartner racked up 2242 regular season penalty minutes during his NHL career.
